Unlike outlining, shading isn't necessary for every tattoo. Color and shading simply provide more dimension than line work. Contrary to what you might expect, many people report that the shading hurts significantly less than the outlining of the tattoo. If you've already made it through your line work, pat yourself on the back.

The worst part of this tattoo comes after the process is done with. For most tattoos, the pain subsides in an hour or two reducing to irritation and discomfort. But for this particular placement, the pain seems to persist and stay much longer. In some cases, individuals may also experience continuous pain for a total of six hours and upwards.

The location of your tattoo plays a big role in how much it hurts. Nerves, glands, arteries, and veins are more painful to tattoo over. As well, joints or anywhere where the bone is closer to the skin is more painful. There is less give, and some people find the tapping sensation over the bones to be unpleasant.

I think most people will say that the color hurts less if they get it done the same time as the outline, by the time they move onto the color and shading the area is already pretty numb. But if you break it up, depending on how long you've waited between sessions, the area could still be a bit sore and then hurt more.

So, in my experience, a back tattoo hurts after two hours, when it keeps on getting over your ribs that protect your lungs. Anyways, it is nothing unbearable - still, it’s one of the most painful parts of the body and this is said by a guy like me who hardly feels any kind of pain on the rest of the body itself..
