Studies have discovered that those tattoos that rise up are results of scarring and deeper penetration of the pigment. This is an indication that there is too much damage done on the skin causing internal structures to compensate, in order for the damage to be repaired.

It's raised, because of scar tissue. Your artist may have worked the skin over a little too much. But in most cases, the scar tissue won't be noticeable, but if you get a sub exposure, high blood pressure, dehydration (alcohol), or heat (hot shower, hot weather, etc). 2.

The weather is the most likely culprit when it comes to occasional, but consistent tattoo irritation. Some people notice that for them, it only happens in the summertime. When temperatures and humidity rise, it can make your tattoo swell slightly. This swelling causes a slight stretching of the skin, which also results in an itch.

A raised tattoo may be due to allergic reaction to the ink used, skin conditions, body reactions among other triggers we have discussed. Sometimes it can be infected, be raised after healing or be itchy.

One tattoo that is over six years old will have it happen in patches. The normal skin in between lines will be unaffected. It's more likely to happen in red segments but not limited to it. It happens when I am stressed but isn't limited to it.
